ERCP

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a specialized procedure used to examine and treat conditions affecting the bile ducts, pancreas, and gallbladder. It combines endoscopy and fluoroscopy (X-ray) to diagnose and treat issues such as bile duct blockages, gallstones, tumors, or inflammation. ERCP is commonly used for conditions like jaundice, pancreatitis, and biliary obstruction.

ERCP Q&A

What is ERCP Used For?

  • Diagnosing and Treating Bile Duct Blockages
  • Removing Gallstones from the Bile Ducts or Gallbladder
  • Treating Obstructions or Strictures in the Bile Ducts or Pancreatic Duct
  • Diagnosing Pancreatitis or Pancreatic Cancer
  • Stenting or Dilating Narrowed Bile Ducts
  • Investigating Causes of Jaundice or Unexplained Abdominal Pain

How is an ERCP procedure performed?

You will be given a sedative to help you relax and minimize discomfort during the procedure. A flexible tube with a camera (endoscope) is inserted through your mouth and advanced down the throat into the duodenum, where the bile and pancreatic ducts open. Once the endoscope reaches the area of interest, a contrast dye is injected into the ducts, and X-ray images are taken to assess any blockages or abnormalities. If necessary, the doctor can perform treatments during the procedure, such as removing gallstones, placing stents to open blocked ducts, or taking biopsies. After the procedure, you will be monitored for any complications, and the results will help guide future treatment or follow-up care.
